Newcastle is a fantastic city, and with new activities and events popping up all the time, it’s difficult to ever be bored. But what if you only have 24 hours to enjoy the area? Whether you’re planning a weekend trip to Newcastle or visiting on a budget, we’ve put together what we think is the best way to spend a day in Newcastle city centre.

Remember, if you’re staying with us at The Albatross Hostel, our reception team are the best tour guides in Newcastle and always have insider tips for enjoying the city. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with them before your stay for any advice on the area.
Arrive early to make the most of your time. If you’ve just landed in Newcastle or arrived by train, we offer secure luggage storage at The Albatross, so you can safely leave your bags with us before check-in and start exploring straight away.
For breakfast, there are endless options, but our choice is Blakes, a traditional café serving simple but delicious meals, ideally situated for people-watching on Newcastle’s stunning Grey Street, often described as one of the most beautiful streets in the UK.
Once you’ve finished your breakfast, head for a walk down towards the Quayside. Make sure to look up and admire the Georgian architecture that lines Grey Street and Dean Street, leading all the way down to the River Tyne.
When you reach the waterfront, the seven iconic bridges that span the river come into view, including the impressive Tyne Bridge, creating a gorgeous and peaceful landscape, especially in the morning.
Spot the kittiwakes that have made the Quayside their home, usually found under the Tyne Bridge or across the water nestled in the walls of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. This converted flour mill overlooks the river and is home to contemporary art exhibitions and community spaces. Best of all, it’s completely free to enter, making it a great morning activity if you’re exploring Newcastle on a budget.

For lunch, we recommend heading back up into the city centre to the beautiful Grainger Market. This Grade I listed market hall is home to generations of independent traders selling everything from tasty homemade food to vintage clothing and handcrafted gifts.
It’s a real melting pot of cultures, smells, tastes and sounds, and it’s the perfect place to visit if you want to immerse yourself in Geordie culture during your Newcastle weekend break.
After you’ve indulged at the Grainger Market, there are plenty of ways to spend your afternoon. If you’re a football fan, you must book a stadium tour at St James’ Park, home to Newcastle United. Walk down the players’ tunnel, sit in your favourite player’s seat, and even ascend 150 feet into the sky on the rooftop tour for spectacular views across the city.
If football isn’t your thing, why not explore some of Newcastle’s rich history? Visit the 12th-century Newcastle Castle, or discover the fascinating Victoria Tunnel, a series of underground tunnels built in the 1840s and previously used to transport coal beneath the city.

Or, if you’re an avid bookworm, did you know Newcastle is home to the largest independent library outside of London? The Lit & Phil houses more than 170,000 books and offers tours so you can hear its story straight from the experts.
Now head back to The Albatross Hostel to freshen up before heading out to experience Newcastle’s world-famous nightlife scene. One of the biggest advantages of staying in a centrally located hostel in Newcastle is that you’re just a short walk from the city’s best restaurants, bars and clubs.

If you’re ready to dance the night away, visit iconic clubs such as Tup Tup Palace and Digital, which features annually in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs in the World list, cementing Newcastle’s reputation as one of the UK’s top nightlife destinations.
